An Old English word meaning the official distributor of the alms (charitable gifts) of another.
Central to Havens' effectiveness is the network of Almoners who disburse Havens funds to people in need. Almoners are carefully appointed by the Havens Board based on their commitment, integrity, and ability — as well as their likelihood of identifying prospective beneficiaries appropriate for Havens' grants program.
Almoners are carefully interviewed, screened, trained, and supervised by Havens staff to ensure that they are capable of immediately and compassionately responding to financial crises and disasters.
Havens currently has almost 130 Almoners, many of whom have volunteered for years. Current Almoners represent a wide variety of community, religious, and social services organizations collectively.
